Kāretu marae rests in the Kāretu valley, Taumarere (Bay of Islands), near the sacred river of Taumarere, which flows from Kāretu out to Opua, Paihia and Kororāreka (Russell) in the Bay of Islands. The primary hapu are Ngā Uri o Pomare II, Ngāti Manu, Te Uri Karaka and Te Uri o Raewera.

The tupuna whare also carries the name Ngāti Manu and the wharekai is Memorial Hall. Kāretu marae is connected to the maunga named Puketohunoa (opposite the marae) and to the ancestral waka Ngātokimatawhaorua, Mataatua, Kurahaupo and Māmari.
